Radio Rose was born in Brooklyn, NY to a pediatrician and meringue dancer. She has worked with top clients such as Ciroc, Burton, Filia, Xbox, Married to the MOB, and 55DSL. Rose has also been profiled at major cool spots as Santos Party House, Savalas Socialista, FatBAby, CMJ Fer Fort, and Brooklyn’s Habana Outpost.

Rose has styled up and coming stars like Nina Sky, Rye Rye and Teyana Taylor. Even if you do not leave in the surrounding area of NY you can still enjoy Radio Rose from your own computer screen. AroundTheWayGirls.blogspot.com is her site where she updates both witty and hilarious style and music updates. You can also check out her new website RadioRose.net!

Let's get to know Raido Rose a little better...
Why did you start your site Around The Way Girls?
Growing up, I always felt like there weren't enough creative people to give insight to us youngins. I was always interested in the arts but I never has someone to talk to about their experiences, or the options and opportunities that were avail. So in 2006 me and my good friend Stella (a now screenwriter alum at Westminister) got to writing. But it was very important that I was speaking to girls in a tangible, everyday girl around the way tone.
How do you try to relate to your readers?
Well, I see them as my homegirls instead of someone I have to school. I am them. I try to think that I'm having a conversation with a girl on my block, and you know how at times we just have to throw some silliness in the mix. I'm silly by nature so I try to express that when I'm writing.
Where are your top places you love to buy your key clothing items?
THRIFT SHOPS! Like really!I've found the craziest things, MCM and CHANEL bags, Helmut Lang denim, Marc Jacobs dresses. If you want to look original and not spend a lot of coins, it doesn't get any better! I also love vintage shops like FunkyFannys and Edith Machinist and consignment stores like INA and Tokyo 7. When I have a little more coins I like to hit up IN.Ventory they have a good variety of international and local designers.

Who are your favorite musicians right now and why?
I love this new culture of NY artists that are all on the brink of breaking through big. For starters, my sistren Jasmine Solano, a female MC here in NY who gives hope to women in hiphop, there's something so amazing and complex about how she can open your mind and still bring a party appeal. Listen to her track "That's not it" www.myspace.com/jasminesolano
Another artist I love is Shyvonne, have you ever heard someone sing and the give you chills? That's def her, she has amazingly strong vocal skills, you will shiver! Some people have a voice of an Angel but she has the voice of a Legend. Listen to her track "Mindreader" produced by Kingdom www.myspace.com/shyvonesmusic
How does music and fashion influence each other in your life?
They both affect me in similar ways. They both inspire, motivate, and soothe me. There isn't a minute of the day where I'm not affected by one or the Other, a song may remind me of a place and time which can then remind me of a look or trend. And that cycle always repeats often.
What is the most crazy/stylishy/sexy/cool/weird shoot you've ever done and why?
One of the funnest and craziest shoots I've had to date was for Acclaim Magazine with the ladies of House of JackieBrown. It was art directed by them and the idea was to go wild and crazy with colors, styling and the idea. They are creatively my favorite package, they love bright colors, mix matched textures and big hair.Photographer Mel D Cole shot in the streets and subways of NY in a cold october afternoon (a day before halloween) so although our models looked out of place wearing bikinis in Harlem, they seemed to fit right in.
I feel like you've been one of the first to kinda hard core hit this new-80s-street-hip-hop hipster fashion style--how did you get involved with this particular genre?
This can be simply explained: "I just copied what my sister looked like when I was growing up"
Shaved head, oversized jkts and bright colors, then the wave hit the masses and it suddenly became just another oversaturated Fad.

If you could style anyone on in the world right now --who would it be an why?
Hmm it would have to be someone that needs help,I wouldn't want to work on someone I admire. I wouldn't mind taking one of these HipHop dudes like a Jim Jones or a Trey Songz and make him look very Johnny Depp-ish or "1930s Hobo", I think that's a super sexy look for Men. And I wouldn't mind playing dress up on them ;).
For the ladies, there isn't 1 person in particular that I would want to hone in on, it seems like people either want to take too many risks or non at all, so it leaves the range too broad to choose from.
What made you decide to become a DJ?
I spent plenty of years behind DJ booths all over NYC/Vegas/Miami with my boo SureShot. His talent would amaze me, I was a total groupie, helping him lug crates (well, more like hailing the cab for the crates, those things were heavy), holding record bags, sitting in his old room when he first would unseal a record and play it for hours on end. Being a music fanatic I always admired it and I wanted the chance to try to do it myself.I used to try to scratch my dad's Diana Ross records when I was 10 (that didn't go over very well). So years later when I was a ripe 23, I begged for some pointers, reluctant at first, he put me through a bit of a "DJbootcamp" until he felt I was worthy of showing off anything I learned. 5 years later I'm still very humble of having the oppurtunity to share my love for music and I'm still learning. I'm so appreciative of all I've learned and most importantly I have the upmost respect for every DJ I meet. It takes more than just playing a playlist of songs you see on the Billboard charts. You need skills, patience, and lots of confidence to wear those shoes.
What makes you a Styleaholic?
I feel that to define a styleaholic means that you have the ability to be influential without losing who you really are. You stay true to yourself while bringing individuality.

Posted on January 15, 2010 Andrea Pippins is the founder and creator of the fresh and hot site Fly! Andrea is originally from the suburbs of D.C and was first introduced to beautiful prints as a young girl. When she was young she would go to work with her mother who was a dressmaker for the infamous icon, Solange Cody. Being so inspired by all the gorgeous art that surrounded her, she went on to obtain a B.F.A. in Graphic Design at Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. She was honored with Best Portfolio of her graduating class and went on to work at Hallmark Card in a design position post graduation. After leaving Hallmark she moved to New York and worked for other major companies such as MTV Networks channel and TV Land.
In 2007 she returned to Philadelphia to obtain her Master’s degree in Graphic Design at Temple University. After receiving her Masters , Andrea continues to work with major companies such as WGSN and Free People. Andrea also just opened up her new business I Love My Hair, which promotes the Philadelphia indie art and fashion community with her new workspace, Colab Studios and developing her brand Fly!
Let’s get to know Andrea better….
1.) I adore your blog, Its filled with artistic inspiration. Where do you usually pull your inspiration from when working on different artistic projects?
Thanks! My favorite place to go is the library. (I love the library, I used to want to be a librarian.) Most main libraries have a Print & Picture department where they have collected magazine clippings, vintage illustrations, and other ephemera for you to check out. Whenever I’m working on a project I try to go there to see what I can find. I also have stacks of fashion and design magazines I revisit for inspiration, and I have folders and books filled with color palettes, textures, patterns and clippings I’ve been collected over the last seven years. Then of course the internet which has endless imagery for inspiration.
2.) Your Webisodes are also a big part of your blog! Why did you decide to add that element to your site?
Mainly because it was another dimension I was interested in at the time. I was working in television and was thinking it would be fun to showcase little clips here and there about what I love in New York City (that’s when I was living there). Then I was talking to my friend Rakia who was producing original content for TV at the time and she encouraged me to try it because it would be a fresh extension of the Fly brand.
3.) Once a week you feature a “Fly Girl of the Week” what makes you Fly ?
My silliness when I’m in a good mood. My unique style, from the way I wear my natural hair down to my beat up gray Converse shoes. My graphic design experiences. My desire to teach. My geeky interests in genetic theories, psychology, and astrology. My intense love for creative information, especially from art and design books. My creative passion and my love for inspiring others all make me Fly.
4.) I know you’re a promoter of healthy natural hair, What are your top three natural hair tips?
1. Straightened your hair (press, blow dry, whatever works best) to trim so that you are getting an accurate, clean cut.
2. Use coconut oil to moisture your hair and scalp.
3. Be patient with your hair. Don’t try to make a 45 minute styling session into 10. Instead, do it another time. If you don’t you’ll get frustrated and you’ll be rough with those very fragile coils.
5.) I see tons of prints and bright colors covering your site, does your culture influence your personal fashion style? Yes and no. I love prints and mixing patterns with fun bright colors and I do try to incorporate those elements into my wardrobe but not as successfully as I would like. I tend to use them as more accent pieces versus the core of an outfit. It’s funny my artwork and designs are influenced by colors and prints more so than my home or clothing.
6.) Avid readers know that you love flea markets and boutiques! Why do you lean towards markets than major retailers? Honestly, I think it’s the shopping experience. There’s something so special about going to a flea market, thrift store, or specialty boutique and stumbling upon a totally unexpected item. I like discovery, I like details and feel these elements are often lacking in major retail stores. Then there’s the price, sometimes you can get really great deals supporting your local flea market or boutique. And of course the one-of-a-kind element, most times you’re going to find things no one else will have or pieces from a limited edition. BUT, don’t get me wrong I don’t always have time to “discover” a pair of shoes or funky dress. I think major retail stores are good for basics, or quick and easy shopping. Both shopping situations have great advantages.
7.) What piece of advice do you give to young females fighting to make a name for themselves in the arts?
Here are several:
1. Ask for help. I could not have done a lot of what I’ve accomplished without seeking help from a friend, connection, mentor, etc. We can’t possibly know everything or everyone so you have to ask. We have folks around us to help get us to our next destination, take advantage of them in a good way.
2. BUT be resourceful! I’ve been guilty of this. Sometimes we forget that we are truly capable of doing things on our own. Don’t get caught up in waiting for information or even help from another person, get out there and at least try to get it yourself. If that gallery won’t return your calls about your exhibit , or you can’t afford to hire a PR person then you’ll just have to have an opening in your apartment, read PR for Dummies and get emailing. Times are hard for everyone, this is the time to be creative and innovative with getting your work out there, and sometimes that means relying on yourself. If all else fails then revert back to #1.
3. Do it. Nike had it right! It’s so easy to say you want to try to sell paintings, open an Etsy shop, or start an art blog, but if all you’re doing is saying then it ain’t gonna happen. Again, I’ve been there. Taking baby steps helped me. I wanted to sell my artwork but the process seemed so overwhelming (I have to get a website, find a screen-printer, buy paper, figure out how to ship items, etc.). I made a list of all I had to do and just started with one. When one was done, I could move on to the next and each time I finished one goal I was inspired to tackle the next. Before you know it, you’re done and your wares are happily hanging in someone’s home.
4. Barter your services. If you can exchange your creative skills for photography, website designs or any other services you need to get your name out there, go for it.
8.) What makes you a styleaholic?
Mainly my exposure to style and fashion at an early age. I spent my early years in a sewing studio and I loved being around all the beautiful clothing, fabric, and colorful sewing notions. Then as I got older I loved seeing others develop their style, and admiring how accessories and clothing come together to create a fantastic look in a magazine spread. So I think of myself as a styleaholic in the observational and curatorial sense. I love seeing fashion and being inspired by the way it can influence everything from art to architecture.

Hi Styleaholics, today is a super sad day for the world. As you all are quite aware on yesterday Haiti suffered from a devastating earthquake and several aftershocks that has left an estimated 3 million people in need of emergency aid (according to the Red Cross)
In response this earth shattering event, I'm in the process of trying to pull together a clothing drive/fundraiser event to help.
Like most things in life--help is needed and no one can work alone.
I'm currently seeking the following resources to make this event a reality.
1. A NYC based venue-it can be a nightclub, lounge, private event space etc. It doesn't have to be super big ideally a 100-300 capacity. This would be an after work event during the week of 1/25. *I'm also open to promoters who are interested in hosting this event at their ongoing weekly parties.
2. Media Partners/Volunteer Publicists--Whether you're a fashion blogger or not, I need your help in spreading the word. Ideally I see this as a way for the blogging community to unify and take action by doing something we do daily BLOGGING AND SPREADING FASHOINABLE GOODNESS. Please note you don't have to be a fashion blogger to join us!
3. Items to auction off. With style in mind, it would be great to have some goodies to do a silent auction on and have the money donated to a relief org.
4. Any celebrity, personality, model, designer who wants to partner up and donate their 'name' to the cause. It's America and all the world loves celebrity:)
5. Product Sponsors-If you're a fashion company please donate to this clothing drive all is welcome! Articles of clothing for both men, women and children, as well as shoes and toiletries.
If you're interested please contact me directly at najwa.moses@gmail.com/ please put in the subject line Fashion Bloggers For Haiti.
In the meantime here are list of organizations and websites where you can donate RIGHT NOW!
Secretary of State Clinton has set up an aid line that people can use to send money to support Haiti relief similar to what was set up to support refugees in Pakistan earlier this year. Cell phone users can text "haiti" to 90999 and $10 will go to relief efforts in Haiti. The $10 will show up on your phone bill.

Posted on January 13, 2010 “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.” This popular quote popped in my mind once I viewed the beautiful and meaningful collection of Studio of Ptah. In an industry where superficial images bombard consumers, Studio of Ptah took a stand to celebrate and embrace culture. Ptah is a principle found in African culture which represents “Master Craftsmanship.” The family business originally began in Manhattan, New York. Studio of Ptah creates gorgeous and intricate designs inspired by the art and significant symbols of Africa and other international cultures. Studio of Ptah designs are hand designed by the creative, Artisan Heru Semahj. Semahj has devoted himself and his craft to designing fine jewelry which stands for love, family, and other positive values.
Not only does the collection represent strong life values but also allows its consumer to customize their piece. Studio of Ptah’s permits clients to personalize any design to fit their needs. By doing this they allow each customer’s creativity and individuality to flourish. Studio of Ptah has been worn by both brilliant and creative artists. One of the most notable piece is Erykah Badu’s signature Ankh ring. Other artists include Andre Benjamin, Afraka Bambatta, Earth, Wind & Fire, Gary Dourdan, Roshumba, Full Force and many more! They are also the personal jewelers of Erykah Badu, Wesley Snipes, and Ben Vereen.
Other places where you might have seen such one of a kind pieces would include Essence Magazine, Harriet’s Cole books, “Jumping the Broom: The African American Wedding Planner” and “Vows.” Studio of Ptah pieces are truly breathtaking. Beyond the pieces being a work of art, one should embrace the fact that there is a positive and powerful message behind it!
